Maya Wrap Baby Ring SlingsProduct Rating: Product Review (submitted on March 28, 2012):
I bought this sling when my daughter was 1 month old hoping that it would help me to accomplish more around the house since I could carry my daughter in it while she is sleeping or nursing.
First, I have discovered that it's practically impossible to nurse the baby in a sling. Breastfeeding of a baby of this age typically requires two hands - you hold the breast with one hand and baby's head with another hand. The sling does not provide firm and steady support that is required for baby's head during breastfeeding. Even if I managed to latch my daughter on properly she would come off the breast almost immediately (or would pull on the breast) if I let her head go and the head would be supported only by the sling.
Second, my daughter always seemed to be very squished and would cry when I put her into the sling. I have tried a few times with help of my mom following the instructions on a DVD but my daughter did not like it.
When my daughter turned 3 months we tried the next position - sitting in a sling with legs curled up inside. She liked it, and after a couple of tries it was fairly easy to put her in. She could spend up to a half an hour in it watching everything I was doing which was probably something interesting and new for her, and on the other hand would allow me to get some things done. The drawback I discovered is that my back and my shoulder joint started to hurt. I have never had back pains in my life, even during pregnancy, so it was very disappointing to feel the pain over use of this sling. Another problem is that it's very hard to do anything that requires bending or picking things up from the floor, so the range of things that you can do with your baby in a sling is fairly limited. My daughter looked very cute in a sling, and we have made several nice photographs while she was in a sling in this position. Other than that, and occasional use around the house when I desperately need to get something done, and do not want to leave her crying, we did not use this sling much.
Now my baby is 6 months old, and it's time to move on to the next carrying position but because she is getting heavier, and the sling puts pressure on my back and shoulders, I do not think I will be using it much.
Overall, definitely does not worth what I paid for it - I would not buy it if I had to do it again.
A note from the bynature.ca family: Thank you for your review! We're sorry to hear you had trouble with hands-free nursing and positioning with your sling. A ring sling provides one of the best opportunities for hands-free nursing of a newborn, but there is a learning curve. You might try to contact a local babywearing group and/or midwife or doula that would have experience with using a ring sling. Of course if you are able to come into our store in Orillia, we'd love to help you through these challenges. Also, the forums at thebabywearer.com offer a fantastic resource if you have had trouble finding local support. I hope this helps!
