The Sunshine Vitamin in just one drop!

We may not do it by diet alone! Canada’s Food Guide has recognized that vitamin D is the only nutrient which adults over 50 cannot rely on diet alone to receive their recommended daily dose.

We shouldn’t do it by sun alone! The Canadian Dermatology Association says “In order to lessen the health risks associated with skin cancer yet still reap the known and possible benefits of vitamin D, the CDA recommends people concerned about vitamin D levels take 1,000 units of vitamin D supplements a day. These are safe to use and equally effective as the sun in maintaining healthy levels of this vitamin in the body while avoiding the risk of getting skin cancer.”

Ddrops are the sunshine vitamin in just one drop! Ddrops offers people an alternative to taking conventional pills or capsules. It is designed to be licked off any clean surface such as the back of a washed hand or a spoon. It can also be dropped onto food or into liquids. Ddrops contains no preservative, no artificial flavour and no added colour. Ddrops is wheat-free gluten-free, soy-free, corn-free, sugar-free, milk-free and peanut-free.

Medicinal Ingredients: Each drop contains vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) 1000 IU (25mcg). The vitamin D3 in Ddrops products is naturally sourced from lanolin. Although lanolin comes from sheep wool, the animal is not harmed. Ddrops is classified as a vegetarian product for ‘lacto-ovo’ vegetarian use.

Non-Medicinal Ingredients: Thin vegetable oil (purified components of coconut and palm oil). There are no other chemicals or additives. It is tasteless and odourless.

Size: 10ml (365 Drops)

Why Vitamin D?

Why is Vitamin D so important for our well-being? Research is proving that Vitamin D has many benefits on multiple organs within the body. Too little vitamin D can lower the immune system and increase the risk of heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes and more.

There is no doubt that vitamin D has been a popular topic in the medical news. Many common diseases have been associated with vitamin D deficiency, many of which are supported by quality studies. Unlike other vitamins, vitamin D is actually a building block involved in repair and maintenance of the body. In a recent publication that reviewed controlled trials, vitamin D was shown to reduce total mortality. Many believe that the greatest role vitamin D can play is to decrease the risk of chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, common cancers, infectious diseases, and autoimmune diseases. There are so many good reasons and health benefits!

How does Vitamin D work in the body?

Vitamin D has traditionally been associated with bone development. Vitamin D helps the body use calcium and phosphorus to build and maintain healthy bones and teeth. Now more research shows an association with many functions in the body. There are 36 different types of tissues in the body that contain vitamin D receptors (VDRs) and would therefore have the ability to respond to circulating vitamin D in the body.

Bones, Teeth & Skeletal Muscles

Vitamin D promotes the growth formation of bones. Vitamin D regulates the blood levels of calcium and phosphorus and is needed for healthy bone growth and structure. Vitamin D deficiency associated with the skeletal system include:

  • Prevention of bone softening, deformity and fractures known as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.
  • Prevention of osteoporosis, which involves reduced bone mineral density, and is characterized by broken bones (especially hip, wrists and spine)

Muscles contain vitamin D receptors. Muscle strength and speed has been shown to improve when vitamin D levels increase.

Immune System

Vitamin D works on the immune system, has anti-tumour activity, and has a role in modulation of the immune system

Vitamin D is changed into a hormonally active form within the body. There are vitamin D hormone receptors on immune cells.

As a result, Vitamin D may provide therapeutic benefits in the following types of diseases:

  • inflammatory (such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis)
  • autoimmune (such as multiple sclerosis, type I diabetes, and lupus)
  • organ transplant rejection
  • cancers (breast, colon, prostate, leukemia, squamous and basal cell carcinomas)
  • dermatologic conditions (psoriasis, actinic keratosis)
  • infection (colds, influenza)

Cardiovascular System

The mechanism and role of vitamin D in cardiovascular disease prevention is actively studied.

Research indicates that vitamin D may have beneficial impact on the following diseases:

  • High Blood Pressure
  • Coronary Disease
  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Cardiovascular events
  • Stroke
  • Peripheral Artery Disease
  • Heart Attacks

Brain

Tissues in the brain have vitamin D receptors and respond to the active form of vitamin D. Research suggests that vitamin D is essential for healthy brain development for the fetus and early life. Research also indicates a link with vitamin D in the following diseases:

  • Autism
  • Schizophrenia
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Depression

Vitamin D Recommendations

How much vitamin D should you be taking? There is no easy answer because nobody really knows how much vitamin D humans really require. Making sure that you and your family members have enough vitamin D is often an individualized approach and depends on a number of factors, including the time spent outdoors in summer sunshine, the types of food in the diet, and other factors. However, based on scientific data, various medical associations have provided some guidelines.

This website cannot make or endorse any recommendations. The best advice and answers come from your physician or other healthcare professional. Your physician may require a blood test to review your current blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D or 25(OH)D₃ (calcidiol) – the major metabolite of vitamin D₃ to determine your vitamin D nutritional status. The recommendations are summarized below.
