Unbleached ORGANIC Cotton Prefolds are the best of the best and you won't find better quality prefolds than these in Canada. Our custom organic cotton prefolds are the softest, highly absorbent, hard-to-find, pure 100% ORGANIC cotton twill weave diapers that are imported directly from Pakistan. These are the same GREAT quality as conventional diaper service quality unbleached Indian prefolds, with all the benefits of organic cotton. Soft, durable, environmentally friendly, and best of all, affordable.
These are the real thing! Diaper Service Quality (DSQ) prefolds are your most economical choice when it comes to cloth diapering. They are a soft, flat style of diaper that requires folding and the use of a separate waterproof cover, but they are definitely worth the extra effort. They wash up beautifully, dry in no time, and you can customize the fit to your own baby. A wonderful choice for a baby of any shape or size. No need to choose between conventional cotton or organic cotton prefolds when organic cotton can be used at such an incredible price. Finally an economical organic cotton option in cloth diapers.
Prefolds can be pinned, fastened with a Snappi Cloth Diaper Fastener (so easy!), or folded in thirds and simply placed inside of a wrap-style diaper cover. They are suitable for the newborn to the toddler. While they require a bit more work to fold on a baby, this is a classic, dependable and economical diapering method that has stood the test of time. For as little as $500 Canadian, you can use cloth diapers on your baby from birth to potty training with a system of prefolds and Bummis Diaper Covers that is simple, easy to care for, and will last through more than one child with proper care and laundering. Prefolds - The ORIGINAL One-Size Cloth Diaper.
That's right! Prefolds are considered to be the original "one-size" cloth diaper. Premium (regular) sized prefolds can be used on the average baby from birth through to toddler, depending on how you fold them. Most parents still prefer to use 2 sizes - Infant sized prefolds on their newborns, for a more customized fit and less bulk, and Premium prefolds on their older baby. If you are new to cloth diapering, and you are using your cloth diapers on a newborn, you may also find it easier to get a snug fit with smaller sized prefolds, which will help to contain leaks better. Generally you will be able to use Infant sized prefolds for 4-6 months, depending on the growth of your baby. After this time, Infant prefolds make GREAT doublers for overnight, naps and longer periods between changing, so they will not go to waste. Unless you are on a very tight budget, we still recommend parents invest the small amount into having two sizes which will give you a better fitting system with less bulk, overall. The end result is a a better cloth diapering experience for everyone.
Frequently Asked Questions about our Unbleached Prefolds
Melanie Doan of Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada) asks us...
Q: Are prefold cloth diapers really that difficult to fold?
A: Prefold cloth diapers are not really that difficult to fold, but there is an initial learning curve as there is with most new experiences. Since most parents are used to seeing and using disposables, the transition to cloth diapers seems scarier than it needs to be. We're hoping to change that perspective, one bum at a time.
Whether you choose to use prefold cloth diapers, fitted cloth diapers or pocket cloth diapers, you will have to learn a few basic techniques at the beginning, in order to adequately prevent leaks. But don't worry! We've been right where you are - new to using cloth diapers - and we're happy to help! Folding prefolds is not as difficult as it may seem, and after a few days of using your new diapers, you will be folding them just as quickly and finding them just as easy to use as disposables.
There are multiple ways of folding prefolds and the simplest method of how to fold prefolds is to simply tri-fold them into a cloth diaper cover and put the cloth diaper on your baby. The following diagram shows how using prefolds can be as easy as folding them in thirds (image 1), laying the prefold inside of the diaper cover with a cloth diaper liner on top (optional) (image 2), and fastening the diaper and cover securely on baby (image 3).
How to Use Prefolds (tri-fold method)
It's really that easy! Remember, prefold cloth diapers are the SAME cloth diapers that diaper services across Canada - from Vancouver to Halifax - choose to use with their daily, bi-weekly, or weekly diaper service. If they were that difficult to use, diaper services would not have any business at all. Prefolds really are the most reliable, dependable, adjustable and long-lasting cloth diaper available. And let's not forget how incredibly affordable prefolds are! At only $3-5 each, you would be savings hundreds of dollars with your diapering choice, even with organic cotton.
Q: What is the difference between Indian Prefolds and Chinese Prefolds?
A: Prefolds go by many names - Indian Prefolds, Chinese Prefolds, DSQ Prefolds (Diaper Service Quality Prefolds) and just plain Prefolds. Chinese Prefolds and Indian Prefolds are almost identical to the untrained eye. The main difference between Indian Prefolds and the "Chinese Prefolds" variety is where the cotton is sourced and the prefolds are manufactured. Indian cotton is known by many to be incredibly soft and highly durable. Generally speaking Indian Prefolds are softer, more plush and more absorbent than Chinese prefolds. Keep in mind that because the term "Chinese Prefolds" is sometimes used interchangeable to describe any and all styles of prefolds, it may not be a true Indian or Chinese prefold you are purchasing. Only true diaper service quality prefolds (whether they are called Indian or Chinese prefolds is irrelevant) will stand up to the multiple washings and provide you with maximum absorbency.
The most important factor in determining a quality prefold is whether or not the manufacturer uses high-quality, durable and absorbent materials. They should be ALL cotton (no fillers or polyester sewn in - watch the department stores for this!), contain at least 8 layers of material through the center (wet-zone) and it's essential that the prefolds are designed for diaper service use. Our prefolds are used and loved by diaper services across Canada and they will stand the test of time. At Parenting By Nature we only carry the best, and our Indian Diaper Service Quality Prefolds are unmatched in quality, performance & price.
Q: Which Cloth Diaper Covers do you recommend using with Prefolds?
A: In order to prevent leaks and help contain any mess inside of your prefolds, we highly recommend the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap for a perfect and trim fit, or a wool diaper cover for a completely natural system. The Bummis Super Whisper Wrap seems to be the easiest for the beginner to use, and it's easy care means they can be tossed in the washing machine alongside your cloth diapers. The Bummis Original Diaper Cover is top pick for a newborn cloth diaper cover among many of our customers.
Cloth diaper covers that work best with our Organic Prefolds include:
- Bummis Super Whisper Wrap (our number one pick for a virtually LEAK-FREE system)
- Stacinator Wool Cover (our favorite, all-natural solution)
- Aristocrats Wool Cover (best for night-time use - a closure such as pins or a Snappi is required to keep your prefolds in place)
- Bummis Original Diaper Cover (a top pick for a newborn or preemie)
How to Wash & Fold Prefolds Instructions
The Bummis User Guide ~ Washing and Using Cloth Diapers offers comprehensive washing and folding help for parents that are new to using prefold cloth diapers. This will help get you off to the right start with prefolds. (Please note, these recommendations are for PREFOLD cloth diapers or true cotton or hemp cloth diapers only. Instructions will vary for cloth diapers containing polyester or PUL covers - Fuzzi Bunz, Happy Heiny's, BumGenius cloth diapers etc. Soaking cloth diapers of any style is NOT recommended nor is this necessary).
Regardless of the type of cloth diaper system you are using, we highly recommend having a handful of prefolds on hand as you will find many uses for these diapers. Prefold cloth diapers can be used as diapers, burp cloths, changing pads, diaper doublers (infant size), pocket diaper inserts and even dust & cleaning rags when your baby is potty-trained.
Organic Cotton Prefolds really are a classic, dependable cloth diapering method as well as being one of your most economical options for cloth diapers.

Organic Cotton Indian Prefolds are unmatched in quality and absorbency when compared to standard cotton or Chinese prefolds. Your prefolds will arrive rather flat looking, however, after a few washes to remove the natural oils that are present, they will quilt up beautifully making them super soft and plush. Maximum absorption is reached after about 6-8 washes. As with anything that is 100% cotton, please expect a minimum 10% shrinkage.
|Prefolds Size||Weight||Dimensions||After Washing||Ply|
We've included both washed and unwashed dimensions for our prefolds. These are all approximate and may vary slightly from batch to batch. The average Chinese prefold is 12"x15" for the Infant sized prefolds (UN-washed) and 14"x20" for the Premium size. As you can see, the dimensions are almost identical - it's the quality and softness of the cotton that will be a more important concern.
