What is Baltic amber?
The Baltic amber-succinite is a 100% authentic, natural fossilized resin produced 30-90 million years ago by pine trees growing throughout Northern Europe. These trees grew from the southern regions of the present day Scandinavia and nearby regions of the bed of the Baltic Sea. As the climate warmed, conifer trees started to exude large amounts of resin. According to scientists, Baltic amber is a fossil pine resin from this region that has achieved a stable state through oxidation. Although there are more than 125 types of fossil resins known throughout the world, many of these resins are not true amber, but its relatives. Baltic amber is uniquely known for its quality and healing properties and is the most sought after amber available.
How is Baltic amber collected?
The oldest and easiest way to obtain genuine Baltic amber is by collecting it on the beach, in regions close to the Baltic Sea. Some of the largest deposits of amber are located below the bottom of the Baltic Sea and amber stones are thrown out of the sea by waves during strong storms. Amber, washed up from the bottom of the Baltic Sea and the Courish Lagoon, is collected on the beach shores. Our Baltic amber teething necklaces are made in Lithuania, where it is their national gem. Do Amber Teething Necklaces really work?
In nature, amber resin would have been used by the plant or tree as a natural antibiotic against infection, viruses, and physical attack. The plant would also use the resin like a wound dressing. In ancient times, amber was a substance used for healing cuts or a plaster for bodily wounds. During the middle Ages, when plagues swarmed across towns taking a heavy toll of the inhabitants, fumigation with the smoke of burning amber was considered an effective preventive measure. As recorded by Matthaus Praetorius, "During the plague not a single amber-man from [regions] died of the disease" (1690). Amber smoke is still used in aromatherapy today.
Now fossilized, its considered that healing properties have been captured and are released once the resin is warmed by the skin. As the body's temperature warms the amber, this releases the active ingredient in Baltic amber, succinic acid, which can easily be absorbed through the skin and circulated through the bloodstream. Analyzed by the pioneer of modern bacteriology, Nobel-prize winner Robert Koch (1886), the positive influences of amber has been long confirmed. Amber's anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties are recognized by allopathic medicine as a natural analgesic. Succinic acid (amber) decreases the immune response to the change in body chemistry caused by stressors while teething. Succinic acid is a natural analgesic and helps alleviate the immune response (hence decreased rosy cheeks, pain, rashes, etc). In Austria, Switzerland and Germany, you will find amber teething necklaces sold in local pharmacies. Europeans consider it similar to wearing Tylenol - you can even find amber necklaces sold in most pharmacies in European countries.
Unlike cheaper amber 'chips' or nuggets, we only supply rounded polished beads, which lay more comfortably against baby's skin. This allows maximum skin contact and gives added comfort to your child. To increase the natural analgesic properties of amber you may wish to warm the necklace in your hands prior to putting against your baby's skin. The necklace is designed to be worn close to the skin against baby, under baby's shirt.
It is possible that the soothing and calming effect of amber teething necklaces, which has been empirically observed, is based on a combination of factors. Please keep in mind that as with many natural remedies, what works well for one person may not work for another. If the acid and pH in the body is off because of something unrelated to the lymphatic system, the succinic acid will not be as effective. Irritability caused by unknown factors (digestion issues, allergies, sensitivities etc.) and attributed to teething may not improved. Just as Tylenol doesn't work for everyone, or some individuals may need a larger does (consdier two necklaces!), succinic acid will not be 100% effective for every aliment.
We feel strongly that natural and preventative remedies should always be considered prior to chemical or artificial ones. For the sceptics, amber teething necklaces have worked for countless parents and uncomfortable babies in Europe for centuries and are now being enjoyed by thousands of babies in Canada.
Bottom line, if you choose to use an Amber teething necklace, it may provide your little one with relief from teething pain, redness, inflamation or general irritability. Then again, you may not notice any difference. At the very least, an Amber teething necklace makes a treasured keepsake, and look beautiful on your little one. Enjoy!
What do the studies suggest?
Here are a few studies for you to review, if you'd like something beyond anecdotal or empirical evidence.
- Baltic Amber consists of up to 8% succinic acid and its related succinate compounds, whereas other ambers often have no trace of these chemicals (i, ii, iii)
- The 2003 study by Chen (and others) found that succinic acid at low doses, reduced the anxiety effects when tested on mice. They found that succinic acid reduced the stress induced temperature rises in mice. When babies are teething, they experience pain and associated with that a rise in temperature and stress. Based on this study we could assume that the succinic acid in Baltic Amber could therefore reduce this stress and temperature. They also mention that succinic acid has been reported to have a slight sedative effect, has prolonged anaesthetic sleep in mice, and has reduced seizures caused by noise in rats (iv).
- Amber has been shown to have antibacterial properties with a 1-5% solution reducing bacterial growth on food (v).

Why you'll love our Baltic Amber Teething Necklaces:
- Genuine, authentic Baltic amber - the highest quality available. We searched long and hard to ensure this was the real deal.
- No artificial, synthetic, plastic or reconstituted substitutes for genuine amber. Be leery of lesser quality, cheaper products.
- Only smooth, polished, rounded beads (known as baroque) for you child's comfort. No sharp, pointy nuggets or chips!
- Each amber bead is individually knotted on solid thread (not elasticized!) for safety, so in the event of breakage, only one bead will break off. Thread will not loose shape or stretch out.
Our amber teething necklaces are closed with a twist clasp (screw thread), designed to break under extreme pressure.
- Amber contains naturally-occuring succinic acid which is non-toxic (found in the fozzil resin produced by pine trees) and used in medicinal mixtures by many cultures. This is the same succinic acid found in mainstream pain medication.
- Healing Amber is a safe and effective homoeopathic remedy for teething. A perfect alternative to teething drugs, medication or gels.
- Considered a natural analgesic, amber helps remedy restlessness, irritability, sleep trouble and pain.
- Amber is not a stone so therefore warm to the touch, as well as very light and comfortable to wear.
- Bead size is approx. 4mm-8mm (various) and length is 31-33 cm (12-13.5 inches). Shape varies which adds to it's authenticity.
- Genuine Baltic amber collected from the shores of the Baltic Sea and hand-assembled in Lithuania by small artisans.

We've chosen only rounded, smooth amber necklaces for our collection to ensure the intense healing effects of amber are maximized. Amber needs to be warmed against the body which releases the healing oils of the fossilized resin to be absorbed by the skin. Rounded amber beads allow for the most skin exposure which helps to aid in the healing process. Amber is well-known to reduce stress and also give a general sense of wellness to the wearer.
As an alternative to drugs or teething pain, an amber teething necklace is one of the most non-intrusive methods of helping your little one. Worn close to the skin, under your baby's shirt, many parents will attest to the calming effects of amber teething necklaces and are pleased to find a natural method of relieving teething pain without resorting to drugs.
True Baltic amber is not inexpensive. Many imitations on the market are not real amber and instead are hot, plastic resin (made in China is a real clue). Some sellers go through the trouble of actually embedding tiny insects during the setting process so they are look like amber when cooled and solid. Don't be fooled. If you purchase imitation amber you will simply have bought 100% fake plastic beads.
Teething Necklaces - Hazelwood or Baltic Amber? How do I Choose?
A Baltic Amber teething necklace will last for an indefinite amount of time if you’re careful to not break beads, get it coated with lotions or other products, and the safety clasp isn't activated under pressure. Amber is generally used for pain an inflammation only, so as a general rule, if you would treat the condition with a pain reliever, choose Amber.
If you are looking to treat symptoms caused by acidity such as eczema, acid reflux, allergies or frequent rashes, then you’ll want to choose a Hazelwood Necklace for Baby. A hazelwood necklace may also help with teething, just as well, and can also be used in combination with an Amber teething necklace. Your hazelwood necklace should be replaced every 3-6 months.
Safety Concerns when using your Healing Amber Necklace
Genuine Baltic Amber Teething Necklaces are made for wearing, NOT chewing. They are NOT designed for putting in the mouth. Parent supervision is recommended at all times when baby wears a necklace and your child should NEVER be left alone with a necklace on. Always remove your amber necklace from baby when baby is sleeping or unattended. As an alternative, you may wish to wrap the necklace around your baby's ankle, under a sleeper or socks. Your amber teething necklace is considered jewelery and should be treated as such.
The threaded screw in each necklace is removable, although in most cases it is threaded tight enough that it should remain in place. This is how the necklace is designed. The clasp is laboratory tested to release if excessive force is applied to the necklace, which ensures the highest safety. Should the clasp release under normal use, you can easily thread this back into one side of the clasp tightly, and continue to use the necklace.
