BumGenius One-Size Pocket Diaper - The SAME diaper in 4 different sizes!

One-Size Cloth Diapers vs. a Multi-Sized System
Laurence Clark from Saskatoon, Saskatewan (Canada) asks us...
Q: What are the advantages of One- Size cloth diapers?
A: The advantage of a one- size cloth diaper is that you don't have to purchase more diapers as your baby grows. This can often be a more economical system than a multi-sized diapering system. In theory, the same diaper that will fit your newborn will still fit your baby when he becomes a toddler. Now we say "in theory" for a reason. A one- sized cloth diaper will fit your baby best at one certain stage during their diapering days. A one-size diaper will be slightly bulky on a newborn - sometimes more so than a parent will want. As your baby reaches toddler-hood, there is a chance they may outgrow a "one-size" diaper before they are potty- learned. This might mean investing in a few other diapers, just to get you through this stage. While a cloth diapering system of varying sizes will generally fit a baby better, bumGenius one-size pocket diapers are the best fitting one-sized system we have come across.
With a few small adjustments, the same diaper will fit both a newborn (8 lbs or more) and most toddlers, up to 35lbs. Stretchy tabs for a better fit around the waist, velcro closures for maximum adjustability and multiple snap settings to increase and decrease the rise, are just a few of the features that a bumGenius offers to help ensure you receive the best fit possible at any stage for your baby. For a less bulky diaper on a newborn, we suggest our Small Hemp Cloth Diaper Inserts (you'll want the size "small" for an infant). Adding additional inserts may increase the overall cost of this system, but most parents appreciate the trimmer fit they offer and these inserts will make the PERFECT doublers for an older baby, a heavy wetter or during naps, night-time and longer periods between changing.
Another advantage to a one-sized system might be found if you are diapering more than one baby at the same time. With two babies at different ages - in diapers at the same time - this could be the perfect system for you. Being a one-sized cloth diaper, the same diapers will fit both your young baby or infant, and your older child or toddler. This means you only have to reach for one diaper, and not have to worry about which size you are grabbing. Less clutter at the changing station and no need to sort sizes when your diapers come out of the wash make one-size cloth diapers an very convenient system when more than one baby are in cloth.
Q: So a One-Size cloth diaper sounds pretty near perfect. Are there any disadvantages?
A: There are, of course, a few drawbacks to a one-size cloth diapering system. The main drawback of a one-sized cloth diapering system is that the diapers used on your baby are not a "custom fit" to you baby's specific weight/size. This can mean a bulkier diaper than is necessary for the newborn or young baby stage, and/or a diaper that doesn't have quite enough of a rise (how high the diaper will come up to your baby's navel and covering the bum) to adequately cover your baby once they reach the toddler stage. The main complaint with any one-sized system is that during the first 8 months a baby is in cloth diapers you may be faced with the dreaded "bubble butt". A newborn or very young baby may look to be all consumed by diaper alone. Keep in mind that a pocket diaper is generally as bulky as the insert used. There are measures you can take to reduce this bulkiness such as purchasing additional, smaller-sized inserts that are specifically designed for the newborn stage. We recommend the size "small" of our Hemp Diaper Inserts for the best fit with less bulk bulk.
| A multi-sized cloth diapering system almost inevitably offers a better fitting diaper for each age/stage of your baby, but the bumGenius is the best you can get in a one-sized system. The innovative stretchy tabs, velcro closures and multiple snap settings all help to ensure the best fitting diaper, with snug protection against leaks, regardless of the size of your baby. |
| bumGenius Stretchy Tab |
Another drawback to one-size cloth diapers that may not be immediately apparent is the fact that one-size cloth diapers can take longer to put on your child - particularly an infant - than a cloth diaper specifically designed for the current age/weight of your baby. This does not make them the most convenient of the cloth diapering systems available today. BumGenius cloth diapers consist of multiple snap settings, each of which must be fastened together, to get the correct fit on your baby. If your diapers are not already pre-snapped, this can be very overwhelming to many parents and caregivers, particularly those that may already be hesitant about using cloth diapers.
The bumGenius pocket diaper offers a velcro-style closure to help make adjustments a bit easier on the user, once the rise of the cloth diaper is established. Establishing this rise before-hand to get the right setting for your baby can add a bit more time to your routine. Particularly if you are diapering more than one baby with the same diapers, each diaper may need to be adjusted at every change - a fold here and a snap there and there to will need to set even before the diaper goes on. You don't necessarily have to adjust the rise every time you put on a new cloth diaper for only one baby. Once you have snapped the size of your diaper into place you can leave it for most washings (the insert must still be removed), however, we suggest unfolding and unsnapping the diaper completely every couple of washings, for optimal cleaning results.
Something else to consider with a one- size system is the fact that you may not be able to use the same cloth diapers for more than one child unless you invest in a large number for constant rotation in the wash. Many parents believe that a one-sized system is going to be their most economical option, but keep in mind that the number of washes your cloth diapering system will go through over the course of two years is quite high. Just imagine what your favorite t-shirt might look like if washed in HOT and dried on medium-high heat, every other day, after two years! If you plan to cloth diaper another baby in the future you may find yourself spending the same amount of money over the long run as you would have for a multi-sized system, because when baby number two comes along, you will likely need to replace and/or add to the diapers you currently have on hand. If the same diapers are being washed again and again, they are bound to wear out faster that a multi-sized system.
Q: Besides being a One-Size system, how do bumGenius cloth diapers differ from other major pocket diaper brands?
A: Using Fuzzi Bunz Pocket Diapers and Happy Heiny's Pocket Diapers as a base for comparison, our best selling pocket diaper brands, there are a few notably important differences. The first major difference between these brands is the inner lining fabric. BumGenius pocket diapers are lined with suedecloth as opposed to microfleece. Suedecloth is not quite as soft and cozy as microfleece, but it does offer the same stay-dry, moisture wicking features that microfleece is infamous for.
Also, a unique feature of the bumGenius brand of pocket cloth diapers is that they have an "covered slot" style opening, which is where the insert (absorbing fabric) is placed. Designed to help hold your insert in place and keep baby drier, this pocket opening is quite different than the opening found on a Fuzzi Bunz or Happy Heiny's pocket cloth diaper. Some parents have found this to be less convenient to "stuff" than a pocket diaper that offers more open access. Unless you've tried the various brands first-hand, you wouldn't know about the added difficulty this style of opening creates when you go to remove your insert - and we wouldn't be the store we are today if we didn't share this difficulty with you.
Your pocket diaper insert should be removed at each diaper change for adequate cleaning, and an "open" slot opening at the back (see Fuzzi Bunz description) allows easier access to remove this insert. In fact, in most cases you simply have to turn the diaper upside-down over your diaper pail and this insert will just fall out for you. Unfortunately, with the bumGenius "covered" slot opening, you may find yourself "fishing" for your inserts on numerous occasions. This opening also means solids will sometimes get trapped under the flap, and these are not as easy to rinse out with a Mini Shower as they are to rinse off of other brands. This may increase the "ick" factor of cloth diapering slightly.
The stretchy tab feature is unique to bumGenius which has been a great addition to a pocket diaper. These taps help parents achieve a fantastic fit on their baby. The stretch literally hugs a baby around the waist, helping to contain liquid, solids and leaky messes of all sorts. BumGenius also boasts an ingenious 3x3 snap design which is a huge improvement on many other one-size systems. While some parents looking at the array of snaps on a one-size pocket diaper find themselves confused and overwhelmed, bumGenius keeps this simple with the bare minimum necessary to get the job done and prevent that glazed over look from dad or grandparents.
One-Size Cloth Pocket Diapers or a Multi-Sized System - How do you choose?
So, how do you choose which pocket cloth diaper system is best for you? When trying to decide between one-size cloth diapers or multi-sized cloth diapers, ask yourself what is MOST important...
- The trimmest fit possible with the least amount of bulk? Choose a multi-sized diapering system.
- Convenience when diapering more than one child? Choose a one-size system.
- Cloth diapers that will last for 2 or more children? Choose multi-sized cloth diapers.
- The most economical yet convenient system for only ONE child? Choose a one-size system.
- Minimizing your cloth diaper "clutter" - shopping only one time and then be done with it? One-size cloth diapers were designed with you in mind!
- Maximum absorbency & the best fit for my babies age/stage? Multi-sized cloth diapers may be a better choice.
- An all-natural cloth diapering system? bumGenius pocket diapers are 100% polyester. This is a man-made material. You might check out Prefolds or Fitted cloth diapers for something all cotton, organic cotton or a cotton/hemp blend.
An ingenious design. bumGenius cloth diapers g-r-o-w with your baby.
All in all we LOVE the bumGenius pocket all-in-ones. Keep in mind that many parents use an eclectic mix of systems throughout the time their baby is in diapers. Don't feel you need to purchase all one style - you may regret your choice down the road for various reasons. Having 2-3 of each of the various styles of cloth diapers is okay! We've even created a Pocket Diaper Sampler Pack just for you to get a feel for the various styles and differences between brands. Check out our Dazed & Confused Pocket Package today.

Top of my pocket diaper list Review by Kristen
Quality Price Value For a pocket diaper the construction of this is superior. It's super absorbent and seems to really pull the wetness in so baby can stay in it without complaining even during long sleeps, with no leaks! I don't like that the entire thing has to be washed after each use, but all pocket diapers are like that. It washes nicely and dries quickly. (Posted on 7/1/10)

My go-to cloth diaper! Review by Katherine
Quality Price Value I did a lot of research on the various cloth diapering systems available and this one is my favourite. This diaper fits and contains the best for us. My daughter has been in them since she was about 8 lb and we have NEVER had any leaking even when the insert was absolutely soaked. It also contains messes very well due to the snug but gentle fit at the leg openings. I personally like the hook & loop closure because of the easy adjustability. After 6 months the hook & loop tabs are starting to curl up a bit, but the diapers themselves show little to no wear.
My husband also loves this diaper and even he prefers them to disposables. BumGenius OS pockets are 90% of my diaper stash and I love them! (Posted on 7/1/10) -
For a one size pocket diaper this is a good choice Review by Mariko
Price Value Quality My daughter is only 3 months old so I can only comment on how they have been up until now. For a one size diaper it adjusts very well, has better fabric than other brands I have tried. It seems to handle being washed a lot with very little wear and tear. The colors are nice, fun and bright. I did not start using them until my daughter reached about 11lbs and she is now 14lbs. They are very bulky but other wise are still snug enough as to not have any leaks. (Posted on 6/15/10)
