The Ergo Baby Carrier is a revolutionary lightweight baby carrier that is changing the way babies are carried today. With it's ability to adjust for front carrying, back carrying or hip carrying, the Ergo Baby Carrier is truly one of the most versatile modern baby carriers available. An amazingly comfortable baby carrier, the Ergo offers good lumbar support and adjusts well to a multitude of body types making it the PERFECT baby carrier for mom, dad, grandparents and babysitters alike to use and share with ease. Best of all, the Ergo Baby Carrier supports a baby's spine and hips in the healthiest way possible, a seated position (no spine compression), as recommend by chiropractors and family physicians worldwide.

The ERGO Baby Carrier has an ergonomic design which supports a correct sitting position for a baby's hip, pelvis and spinal growth. It disperses most of a baby's weight between your baby's hips and thighs, which helps to eliminate compression of the spine when hanging by the crotch, which many other baby carrier designs require.

Parents everywhere share two simple desires: to make life easier for themselves, and to make life better for their baby and child. You can accomplish BOTH with the Ergo Baby Carrier! The Ergo Baby Carrier is a unique baby backpack that allows freedom of movement and complete comfort for any parent or caregiver. Padded shoulder straps and a very supportive waist belt on the Ergo help to distribute your baby's weight evenly across your body for maximum comfort up to 40 pounds and more, leaving your hands free for work or play.

The Ergo Baby Carrier can be worn on the front, back or hip position and is a popular baby carrier among dads and grandparents for it's ease of use and "mainstream" appeal. Simple and smart solid colors never go out of style - this is one baby carrier that can be used for years to come!

Ergo Baby Carrier

Dads LOVE the Ergo Baby Carrier too!

Ergonomically designed to balance a baby's weight to a parents' hips and shoulders, the Ergo Baby Carrier will alleviate physical stress and strain for the wearer. It can be shared by many different sized users with just a few quick and easy adjustments to the straps. For your baby's additional comfort, there is even an attached Sleeping Hood built right into the back of your Ergo! This is fabulous for when your baby falls asleep, providing head support as your baby naps. You can easily and comfortable go about your daily activities while your baby rests deeply and peacefully on your back.

What can the Ergo Baby Carrier do that the Baby Bjorn (Snuggly) can't?

Designed as a FRONT carrier only, this is just a start to where the Ergo Baby Carrier and the Baby Bjorn differ. While this may be what many parents want at the time of their infant's birth, eventually you will learn that having a baby strapped to your front only can be problematic if you wish to perform various tasks around your home, yard or while running errands. Carrying your baby on your chest does not make it easy to chop an onion, boil water, carry laundry, sweep the floor, garden or even carry groceries. The simple solution would be to put your baby on your back, piggyback style! Unfortunately the Baby Bjorn does not allow for this, as it has a limited carrying position to front carry (facing in and out) only. The Ergo Baby Carrier can be used in a variety of different carrying positions, including back carries! Use for front facing, hip/side carry, and back carry, piggy-back style

One of the most often reported reviews of the Baby Bjorn is the fact that it is UNCOMFORTABLE on the wearer after only a few short weeks of use. The Baby Bjorn is designed entirely different than the Ergo Baby Carrier, and your child's weight is not dispersed to the hips or upper thighs like the Ergo. Most parents tell us it becomes increasing painful to use the Baby Bjorn once your baby weighs more than 15 pounds or so. Having made the comparison ourselves, we have to agree. The Baby Bjorn supports your baby's full weight on your shoulders and upper back. This creates much stress on your body, and will quickly cause pain (at least this was the case for us!). Once your baby reaches 15 pounds (or around 4 months), the Baby Bjorn became almost intolerable to wear. Designed using modern backpacking features with a supportive hip belt and lightly padded shoulders, the Ergo Baby Carrier will disperse the weight of your baby to your hips and thighs, making it much easier and more comfortable to carry even a 40 pound baby! In fact, the Ergo is so comfortable to wear, it makes a perfect baby carrier for grandparents to use, as well!

Ergo Baby Carrier
The Ergo Baby Carrier is perfect for the WHOLE family!

Another remarkedly important difference between the Baby Bjorn and the Ergo Baby Carrier is how your baby is actually held and in the carrier itself. A painful condition known as spondylolisthesis is a common result of a baby being carried in some baby carriers by the crotch, similar to what we see in the Baby Bjorn. This position is not recommend by chiropractors and family physicians as it places excessive stress on the base of a baby's delicate and developing spine. To prevent this spinal stress, the key is to have your baby always sitting with their knees at the same level as their bottom, and never below. The Ergo Baby Carrier is ergonomically designed to hold your baby in the healthiest position possible - a semi-squat or sitting position, where your baby's legs are spread to hug your front, back or hips. This position is the same position used to treat hip dysplasia in young children, and promotes correct development and alignment of your baby's hip sockets. The Ergo Baby Carrier prevents compression of the spine due to it's unique design.

The Ergo Baby Carrier is a MUCH better value than the Baby Bjorn for it's overall versatility, longevity and comfort. In fact, the Ergo has been selected as a Parenting Magazine Mom- Tested Product where it received top results from the toughest critics out there - moms across the country!

Can I use the Ergo Baby Carrier to face my baby out, in a front- carry?

We get asked this question a lot, and the short answer is, no, the Ergo Baby Carrier is not specifically designed for a front, facing out position. This doesn't mean it can't be done (the Ergo will accommodate Kangaroo-style of an older baby), but we don't recommend it. One of the many unique characteristics of the Ergo is the ergonomical seated position that your baby is in, when being carried. This positioning supports the spine, hips and thighs of your baby in such a way to prevent compression of this delicate and developing area. It is therefore not advisable to wear your baby facing out. The many parents using the Ergo do not generally find this to be a problem as there are still so many things for a baby to look around and be stimulated with, and their baby has the added benefit of feeling extra safe and secure against their parents chest.

Here at Parenting By Nature we are advocates of our babies facing inward towards the parent in the vertical front carry position.  Dr. Eveline Kirkilionis describes it best in her book “A Baby Wants To Be Carried.” “Infants in outward- facing orientations can’t turn away from surrounding stimuli that become overwhelming.  In this position the baby cannot make eye contact with his or her parent to evaluate facial expressions, social cues, and so forth to make assessment of the situation.  Only choose a baby carrier that allows your child to face you…..never out.”

Using your Ergo Baby Carrier to Breastfeed or Carry an Infant

Babies younger than 6 months of age need ample head and neck support. With the Infant Insert, a specially shaped and padded cushion that fits into the Ergo Baby Carrier in a front-carry position, you will be able to support a newborn or small infant, as well as to breastfeed comfortably. The Infant Insert can be quickly and easily placed into your Ergo Baby Carrier and adjusted or folded to pad and protect just the right places for your newborn. Your baby will be nestled in a well- supported, cozy & protected environment close to your heart and breast.

The Ergo Baby Carrier in combination with our Infant Insert enables you to buy only one carrier that will assist you through all the stages of your baby’s growth.  The insert is specially padded and shaped cushion that can be quickly and easily placed in the carrier and readjusted or folded to pad just the right places for your infant. Your infant is then cradled in a cozy, protected environment close to your heart and breast.  Your baby is supported with both feet to one side in a sling-like position.  This is best for the baby’s physical development from newborn to around four months.  Parents can remain attentive to their baby’s needs at the same time continue daily activities because parent and baby are like one.  The Hood can be extended for privacy when nursing or as a sun shield.

Ergo Baby Carrier Infant Insert

To breastfeed your infant in the Ergo Baby Carrier, you will need to use the Infant Insert to place your baby close to your breast. An ideal position would be where both your baby's legs are together to one side, and your baby's head will be leaning to the other side. Ensure your baby's bottom is centered in the middle of the carrier. It is best to use the Ergo Baby Carrier to breastfeed an infant while you are in a seated position. With the Ergo Baby Carrier and Infant Insert your baby can be cradled in a sling position comfortable, however, for hands-free breastfeeding we would suggest a baby sling, such as the Hotslings Baby Slings or a Maya Wrap Adjustable Baby Sling

Customer Reviews of the Ergo Baby Carrier

  • I was so delighted to receive my Ergo in the mail last week and have been using it none stop since then. It has lived up to everything it claims to be! (Christina Kent, Langley, British Columbia)
  • My husband & and I hiked with our Ergo Baby Carrier this weekend and had Lizzy in it for more than 8 hours each day. I can't believe how pain-free we were lugging around a 2 year old! (Michelle & John Pearce, Toronto, Ontario)
  • Wow! I can't believe I hesitated when I first read about the Ergo carrier. This baby carrier has been worth EVERY PENNY! So far I've house-cleaned, cooked, attended parties, hiked and gardened in it...and we're just getting started! (Jeanette Keller, Oakville, Ontario)

And the number one review we hear time and time again,

  • The Ergo Baby Carrier is SO much more comfortable than my Baby Bjorn, I can barely believe it! (Elizabeth Roberts, Edmonton, Alberta)

It's unanimous! Moms and dads tell us the Ergo Baby Carrier is exactly what they've been looking for, and their baby's love it too! When would the Ergo Baby Carrier NOT be a great choice for me?

While the Ergo Baby Carrier is one of the most versatile and comfortable baby carriers available on the market today, it is not a number one pick for a newborn baby carrier, or for a mom that wishes to nurse hands-free. The Ergo Baby Carrier is BEST suited for a baby that is about 4 months old and has more head control. That's not to say it can't be used for a newborn or for nursing, but if you are looking for a baby carrier primarily for this purpose or for the first few weeks of your infant's life, we would suggest a baby sling such as the Maya Wrap Baby Slings. A baby sling will go on as quickly and easily as a purse, without the need to adjust buckles and straps, as we all know that when an infant is hungry, they are hungry RIGHT NOW.

If you are ONLY buying ONE baby carrier, however, the Ergo baby carrier is the one we highly recommend. This is because you will get the absolute most use out of this carrier from newborn to toddler. It is the only baby carrier we know of that is supportive enough to handle a 40 pound plus baby without neck, back and shoulder strain on the wearer. To use the Ergo Baby Carrier with your newborn, we suggest purchasing the Infant Insert for the additional head and neck support it will provide your baby with, during the infancy stage.

Need more reasons the Ergo Baby Carrier is a GREAT choice?

  • No need to lug around an awkward, heavy car seat, or drag a bulky stroller up stairs, in and out of the car, or on a bus. The Ergo is sleek, light, and makes maneuvering in and out of small spaces a breeze!
  • Provides continued support well past the point of when other baby carries are no longer comfortable.
  • One-size fits all! Easily adjusts for most sized parents & caregivers allowing everyone to experience the joy of babywearing!
  • Frees your hands to accomplish daily activities and chores while still caring for other children. Keep your baby close and happy while playing with your toddler.
  • Great for use with older children! The Ergo Baby Carrier provides the perfect space for a fussy toddler to get some downtime in a busy environment.
  • Your center of gravity stays about the same in the Ergo, unlike many other carriers that require you to lean forward or backward to compensate for the extra load.
  • Natural movement & stimulation promotes neurological development.
  • Prevents flat heads and bald spots, minimizing external pressure to your baby's skull.
  • Carried babies cry 43% less overall, and 54% less during the evening hours. (1)
  • Initiates a self-reliant, secure, independent toddler. Babies develop a sense of security and trust quickly when they are carried frequently.

  1. Good quality carrier, but try before you buy! Review by Vron

I was SO excited to get this carrier. I had tried a few carriers before investing in one and I picked the Ergo because it was comfortable and made extremely well.
My husband loves it, but I am quite petite and I find the straps to be too large on my shoulders. I also could never wear my son (now 25 lbs) on my back because it hurt my shoulders and neck so much. I followed the guidelines on how to wear it, so I am not sure if it's just me, since everyone else out there adores this carrier. I would not recommend this carrier for women of smaller stature (I am 5,2" and 115 lbs). (Posted on 4/30/11)

  2. Worth the investment Review by Andrea

I used the Ergo carrier for my son from the time he was about three months old until he was well over a year old. For most of this time period, I used the carried almost every day. It was a lifesaver! It allowed me to keep him happy while I did household chores or grocery shopping. I loved having my baby close to me, and the Ergo carrier is the ultimate in baby wearing comfort. I have trouble with my back, and wasn't sure if I would be able to use a baby carrier. The Ergo is designed so well that it never aggravated my back or neck the way other slings or simply carrying my son did. Once he was a little heavier, I found it much more comfortable to wear it on my back than my front. It also made shopping a lot easier than trying to navigate smaller stores with a stroller. My son often fell asleep in the carrier, and it is easy to reach back and pull on the hood to cradle his head. This is one of my favourite baby products, and I highly recommend it. 3. Great carrier but too hot for baby Review by wandererkm

    Quality

I bought this in January for my upcoming birth. He was born in March (Toronto) and he is overheating despite being in just a diaper. Even outside he gets too hot and then wakes up a lot. I Love how easy it is to use, how breastfeeding friendly it is, how comfortable it is to use, how easy it is to use, but with the infant insert (and even without it) our son gets over heated and cranky.... I would have gone with the Sport had someone told me this was an issue.

A note from bynature.ca: Thanks for your review! We're sorry you're finding the carrier to be too warm for you and your little one. While the Sport is a lighter option, the fit is very different than the Original carrier. We would highly recommend trying both carriers before choosing the Sport over the original as most parents still prefer the Original when compared together. We're happy to help at any time! 4. What's Not to Love Review by Jennifer

    Quality

I tried a a number of carriers but as my children got older (and heavier) I'd almost given up babywearing since I couldn't find a carrier that was comfortable and didn't cause me shoulder or back pain after extended use. Then I read a blog review of the Ergo and knew I had to try one.

I'm a stay-at-home mom and thus we are a single income family. The price was a little bit of a concern for me but after trying it, using it and loving it for well over a year, I can assure you that it is 100% worth every penny. I've used it for short walks around the neighborhood as well as for long periods of time (like 8 hours a day several days in a row as we toured Paris this spring!). I've worn it while wearing heels and flats; it's really that comfortable.

It's easy to adjust and I can put baby on myself easily; I'm 5'5". With a waist extender, it also fits my 6'8" husband though he says that the arm straps could be a bit longer for him :)

Though mine has been well used and loved; it's still looking new. I've used it front and back - it's comfortable either way. John was older when we got ours so I didn't try or use it with an infant insert but look forward to trying that with our next baby's arrival this spring.
I still carry Chloe (4 years, 40lbs) and John (2 1/2 years and 35lbs) comfortably, though both will be evicted once new baby arrives this spring!

    Highly recommended! (Posted on 1/2/11)

  5. LOVE the Ergo!!! Review by West Coast Momma
    Price
    Value
    Quality

We bought our Ergo about a week into our first child's life, and we used it every single day for at least the first 4 months. With the infant insert (purchased separately) it was the perfect baby carrier, and it was seriously like magic for my son. My baby screamed like a banshee in his stroller, but would fall asleep within seconds of being in the carrier and would stay asleep as long as he was in it.

At around 9 months I found that my son (who was over 20 pounds) was too heavy for carrying on my chest, so I stopped using the Ergo. I know other moms that used it well after, usually by carrying on their backs. I never felt comfortable enough with carrying my baby where I couldn't see him so I didn't try the back.

The Ergo is so easy to use and is one of the best carriers for back support. It also has a cute sun hood that pulls out and helps to cover the baby while he's sleeping. The straps are easily adjustable so it can be switched between parents with just a quick pull or release of the waist and shoulder straps.

We have another baby due shortly and I'm excited to dust off the Ergo and use it again!! (Posted on 1/3/11)

  6. Worth every penny! Review by Branka

Before my son was born I'd done some research and ended up buying the Moby wrap. While I find it to be great for newborns and first months, I find the wrap too hard on my back. When my son was 4 mo, I started doing the research again, looking for the carrier that would focus the weight on the hips, as opposed to the lower and upper back and came across the Ergo carrier. I was shocked to find out that it was the only carrier of that sort on the market. So, I decided to bite the bullet and spend some more money on the new carrier. While I find it a bit pricey, I have to admit it's well made, easy to use and very comfortable. My son loves being in it. I am looking forward to wearing him on my back when he gets a bit older. Money well spent! Note: I have also purchased the chewing pads (sucking pads)...I am sooooo glad I did. The first thing he did was chew on the straps. I can see how these will preserve the life of the carrier! (Posted on 1/3/11)

  7. Great carrier for a petite woman Review by Maureen

I never thought I would be able to wear my son as long as I have been. I`m only about 5`2, barley 100lbs, and have a very tiny frame. I've tried lots of different carries, from hard framed to slings to wraps, and none of them fit or as comfortable as the Ergo. My son is now 15 months old, around 25 lbs, and I can carry him on my back, hip, or front without any problems. I've even carried him on a 2 hours hike up and down hills, without feeling a thing!

I hesitated when buying this because of the price. It is worth every penny! I even think of excuses to use it, and think up trips we should take just so I can use it again! (Posted on 1/4/11)

The Ergo is just a great carrier! Easy to use and adjust, great for moms, dads and even grandparents. Sure, it might not come in the fun patterns you see on other carriers, but it is a true workhouse that will last! It is so incredibly comfortable and will work for babes and toddlers. 9. Great carrier Review by Charmaine

We got the original Ergo carrier when our son was born in 2008. It was an excellent carrier! I used it almost daily. It took a bit of coordination to figure out how to put my son in it & swing it around to use on my back by myself, but I did get the hang of it. We later purchased the waist extender for my husband to use, as he felt the standard waist was too tight.

Our son did suck on the straps while teething, and we might have considered the sucking pads to cover those parts had they been available at that time. Overall, this was one baby gift that we couldn't live without for the first 18 mos or so of our son's life. He's not too fond of sitting in it now. (Posted on 7/24/10)

I just love the Ergo carrier. It's easy to use and it is a must have carrier from infant to toddler. The most important of all it's dad friendly too. Wish I'd tried this one at the beginning instead of the end. Slings are useful when they're really little or when you just need to carry a tired toddler a block- the Ergo will do everything else. Once you get your kid used to the techniques required to get them in to the carrier, it's wonderful. (Posted on 1/2/11)

  12. Perfect carrier for both Mama and child even for long periods. Review by mylittleRuski

I researched carriers extensively and decided on the Ergo based on it's glowing fan base. I was not disappointed. I was traveling to Russia to bring home my 27 lb adopted son. We walked for MILES and MILES in really hot weather and we were both comfortable. I loved the front pocket for airline tickets / passport / dinky cars / pull up / wipes... amazingly, it all fit in. The padded straps and adjust-ability (front / back / side / hip roll for an older child) make it 100% perfect for any situation I was in. I googled and found many youtube videos showing instructions on how to use / adjust / change positions which was great. I have recommended this carrier to several friends and know at least 5 who have bought it and loved it for their toddlers. It was perfect! (Posted on 3/22/11)

  13. Best carrier! Review by Mellissa

Three adults have carried my daughter in our Ergo. It is so easy to get a good fit for each of our various body types. I bought the waist extender and carry it in the front pocket. The learning curve for all of the adults was rather short. In fact, we were all forward and back carrying within a few days. The video was very helpful and the basic construction of the carrier makes it simple to use.

Everyone comfortably carried my daughter until she was well over two and half. My only wish is that I would have bought it when she was younger (we didn't start using it until she was 11months). This carrier is worth the money. (Posted on 2/1/12)

One of my most favourite baby items! I found it easy to put on in any carry position and very comfortable. My husband even wears it by choice! I was hesitant to spend the money but reviews and a sale convined me to buy and I do not regret my decision! (Posted on 11/6/13)

I have to say, I was looking for those ErgoBaby carriers for a long time. Everything seems back order here in Quebec. Then I found this website and purchased my carrier with the design I really wanted! I tried 4 different types of carrier before and the ErgoBaby is really THE best. Your baby will be sitting in a natural position which is great for him as he won't get tired of it and his legs won't get all red and blue (yes, it happened with other carriers I tried)! This carrier allows you to move freely and you will feel that your baby is safe (you won't have to check the belt or the buckles every time you move). There is also a little hood that you can "put on" when your baby is napping. You can't carry the child in an outward facing position, but who would like boobs in their back?! ;) The price is honest and you won't find it cheaper elsewhere on the internet. If you want a choice of designs, great service and realllyyy fast shipping, buy it here.

Also, I looooved the service with bynature.ca!!! I ordered on wednesday; thursday a girl named Natalie called (she even spoke a little French which was really appreciated) to say our carrier has been shipped and we received our purchase on monday! Trust me, it is not the first time I but on Internet, but it is the first time I have this kind if service. Definitely not my last purchase on bynature.ca! :) (Posted on 11/12/13)
